Traceability Basics

A growing number of manufacturers are compelled by economics or, in some cases, by law, to provide full product or batch traceability for tracking and containment purposes.  Indicon has conducted extensive research into the application of a wide variety of both hardware and software to traceability solutions.  As a result, Indicon has developed relationships with the many vendors required to implement the optimum Traceability solution for nearly every application.

Building the Traceability Solution

Once a component identification scheme has been identified, Indicon will combine the latest technology in Laser, Impact, and Ink Jet marking techniques to apply that scheme to your component.
To ensure accuracy, we will follow the marking process with a vision based verification system.  All of this can be accomplished with little or no modification to existing lines and without taking up much precious floor space thanks to our exclusive, patent pending RoboArm™ designed to position the marking and verifying equipment while taking up less than one square foot of floor space!

Utilizing the Data

Producing data is only the beginning.  Once a system for creating individualized birth histories for components and producing a lasting mark on the component reflecting that information, the data must be collected and stored in a meaningful data base.  Indicon has utilized cutting edge software such as VisualPlant to develop plant-wide data collection and analysis systems.

The data collection software can also be used to collect specific production parameters and process variables (such as torques, pressures, temperatures, and test results, etc.) and tie that information to a components specific serial number.  The compiled data is ready for the generation of simple generation of reports based on the appropriate queries which enable rapid and very specific recalls should problems or product changes have to take place

The Long Term Benefits

In addition to becoming legally compliant (required under some circumstances), the implementation of a Traceability scheme can ultimately drive the cost of production downward.  Being able to track the birth history of a component will allow you to pinpoint the location of any production problems resulting in reduced scrap.  Reworks can be limited to the minimum number of affected components instead of being broadened to include weeks or even months worth of production.
